What Roof Ventilation Actually Does
Most homeowners think about their roof in terms of what's visible from the street — shingles, color, maybe a skylight. Ventilation lives out of sight in the attic, which is exactly why it gets ignored until something goes wrong. In simple terms, roof ventilation is a system of intake and exhaust that lets outside air flow continuously through the attic space, carrying heat and moisture out before they can do damage.
In a lot of the country, ventilation conversations center on summer heat buildup. Here in Bellingham, heat is a secondary concern. The bigger issue in Whatcom County is moisture — the kind that comes from long stretches of wet weather, high humidity off the water, and roofs that rarely get a hard, fast dry-out between storms. An attic that can't breathe properly holds onto that moisture, and a roof deck that stays damp is a roof deck that ages fast.

The Bellingham Climate Factor
Our marine climate is mild, which is part of why people move here, but it's tough on roofs in ways that don't show up right away. Driving rain off the Sound gets pushed into eaves and vents at odd angles during winter storms. Salt-laden air along the waterfront and coastal neighborhoods accelerates corrosion on metal vent components and fasteners. And the long, damp moss season — stretching from fall through spring in a lot of years — means anything that traps moisture against wood or shingles becomes a growth medium.
Ventilation doesn't stop rain from falling or moss spores from landing on your roof. What it does is keep the attic side of the equation dry, so condensation isn't adding to the moisture load your roof already has to deal with from the outside.
Why This Is Different From a Drier Climate
In a dry climate, a poorly ventilated attic might just run hot and cost more to cool. In Whatcom County, a poorly ventilated attic traps humid indoor air against a cold roof deck for months at a time, and that combination is what leads to sheathing rot, mold, and premature shingle failure — problems that are far more expensive to fix than a vent upgrade.
How Balanced Ventilation Works
A roof ventilation system needs two things working together: intake, usually at the soffit or eave, and exhaust, usually at or near the ridge. Air enters low, travels up under the roof deck, and exits high, constantly flushing out moisture and warm air. If either side is missing or undersized, the system doesn't work — exhaust vents with no intake just pull conditioned air out of the house instead of fresh air from outside, and intake with no exhaust just lets air pool with nowhere to go.
Building codes generally call for a minimum ratio of net free ventilation area to attic floor space, commonly expressed as 1:150, or 1:300 when a vapor barrier and balanced intake/exhaust split are in place. What matters more than hitting an exact number is that intake and exhaust are roughly balanced — a common mistake we see is a roof with plenty of exhaust vents but soffits that are blocked by insulation or paint, which defeats the whole system.

- Soffit vents — continuous or individual intake vents along the eaves
- Ridge vents — low-profile exhaust running along the roof peak
- Gable vents — end-wall vents that can work for intake or exhaust depending on layout
- Box or turtle vents — individual roof-mounted exhaust vents, common on older homes
- Baffles — channels installed at the eaves to keep insulation from blocking soffit airflow
- Powered or solar attic fans — mechanical exhaust for attics where passive venting isn't enough
What Happens When Ventilation Fails
Poor ventilation doesn't usually announce itself with a dramatic leak. It shows up gradually, and by the time it's visible, the damage is often already done.

None of these signs are exclusive to ventilation problems — a moss patch can just be shade and moisture, a musty smell can be a plumbing issue. That's why a proper inspection looks at the whole picture rather than jumping to conclusions from one symptom.
Ventilation and Shingle Warranties
Something homeowners are often surprised to learn: most shingle manufacturers require adequate attic ventilation as a condition of their warranty coverage. Heat and moisture trapped against the underside of a roof deck can cause shingles to fail from below, and manufacturers know this. If a warranty claim is ever filed and the attic is found to be poorly ventilated, that can affect what's covered. It's a good reason to treat ventilation as part of the roofing system, not an optional add-on.
Ventilation During a Roof Replacement
A roof replacement is the natural time to correct ventilation problems, because the roof deck is already exposed. We evaluate existing intake and exhaust, check whether soffits are actually open and unobstructed, and calculate the attic's ventilation needs based on square footage rather than just matching whatever was there before. In a lot of older Bellingham homes, we find vent systems that were adequate when the house was built but have since been partially blocked by re-roofing layers, insulation upgrades, or additions that changed the roofline.
We don't recommend powered attic fans as a default fix for a ventilation shortfall. In our experience, a well-designed passive system — correctly balanced intake and exhaust — is more reliable long-term, has no moving parts to fail, and doesn't risk depressurizing the attic and pulling conditioned air (and sometimes moisture) up from the living space below. Powered fans have their place in specific situations, but they work best as a supplement to a sound passive system, not a substitute for one.
Ventilation and Moss/Algae Management
Whatcom County's moss season is long, and ventilation is one piece of managing it — not the whole solution. Moss needs moisture and shade to establish, and a shaded, poorly-drying roof slope will grow moss whether the attic below it is well ventilated or not. Where ventilation matters is in preventing the double moisture load: exterior moisture from rain and interior moisture from the attic meeting in the same roof deck. Keeping the attic dry gives the roof surface a better chance to dry out between storms instead of staying saturated season after season.
A Simple Homeowner Checklist
- Check that soffit vents are visible and not painted or caulked shut
- Look in the attic for daylight or airflow at the eaves — if insulation is packed tight against the roof deck, baffles may be missing
- Note any musty smell or visible dark spots on attic sheathing
- Check for even snow melt on the roof in winter — patchy melt patterns can indicate uneven attic temperatures
- Confirm bathroom and kitchen exhaust fans vent outside, not into the attic — this is a surprisingly common and serious contributor to attic moisture
- Ask any roofer quoting a replacement to specifically address intake and exhaust, not just shingle brand and color

Roof shape, attic volume, insulation levels, and even the direction a home faces relative to prevailing wind and rain all factor into what a given roof actually needs.
